Word Counter

Count words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences and estimated reading time live as you type.

About this word counter

Use the word counter for essays, social media captions, website content, assignments and any text with word or character limits.

Useful for real writing limits

The counter updates from the text you type or paste, making it useful for assignments, captions, website copy and fields with word or character limits. Because the text stays in the browser for this tool, you can check drafts without creating an account.

Different platforms may count emojis, hyphenated words or line breaks differently, so use the destination platform’s own counter when a hard submission limit is critical.

How to use Word Counter

  1. Paste or type your text into the editor.
  2. Review the live word, character, sentence and reading-time counts as the text changes.
  3. Use the counts after checking that your document platform uses comparable counting rules.

Word counts can vary between applications

There is no single universal definition of a “word” for every platform. Hyphenated expressions, apostrophes, URLs, emoji and some non-Latin scripts can be counted differently by different editors. A browser word counter is useful for drafting, but when a university, publisher or form has a hard limit, the destination system’s own count is the final one that matters.

Character count is often more important online

Social posts, ad fields, meta descriptions and form inputs often use character limits instead of word limits. Spaces may or may not count depending on the field. This tool separates common text metrics so you can see both the number of words and the overall character length while editing.

Reading-time estimates are only estimates

Reading time is usually calculated from an assumed words-per-minute rate. Technical writing, tables and unfamiliar terminology slow readers down, while short conversational text can be read faster. Treat the estimate as a planning signal rather than a precise measurement.

Editing tip

If you need to reduce length, remove duplicated ideas before shortening individual sentences. That usually improves clarity more than simply replacing words with shorter synonyms.
