Formatting does not change valid JSON data
Pretty-printing adds whitespace and indentation so nested objects and arrays are easier to read. Minifying removes unnecessary whitespace. Neither operation should change the underlying keys, values or structure of valid JSON. If the input is invalid, a formatter should report the syntax problem instead of silently guessing what you meant.
Common JSON errors
- Using single quotes instead of double quotes for strings.
- Leaving a trailing comma after the final item.
- Forgetting a comma between properties.
- Using JavaScript values such as
undefinedor comments, which are not valid JSON. - Embedding an unescaped line break or quote inside a string.
Security note
Do not paste production secrets, API keys, passwords or private customer data into a tool unless you understand exactly where processing occurs. For sensitive material, use a trusted local development environment. Even when a formatter works in the browser, extensions, shared devices and copied clipboard history can create additional exposure.
Debugging workflow
When an API response fails to parse, first validate the raw response before reformatting it. If the error is near the end of a large payload, inspect the surrounding object for an unmatched bracket, quote or trailing comma.
