File size is not the same as image dimensions
Dimensions describe the pixel grid, such as 4000×3000. File size describes how many bytes are stored. You can have two images with identical dimensions but very different file sizes because their formats, compression settings and visual complexity differ.
Reduce dimensions first when appropriate
If an image will only be displayed around 1200 pixels wide, keeping a 5000-pixel source wastes bandwidth. Resizing first reduces the amount of information the encoder has to store. This is usually the cleanest way to make a large phone photo smaller.
Choose quality by content
Photographs tolerate lossy JPEG or WebP compression relatively well. Screenshots, signatures and scanned text are less forgiving because ringing and blur are obvious around hard edges. For text-heavy material, prefer a higher quality setting and avoid repeated re-saving.
Strict KB limits
A fixed quality percentage does not guarantee a fixed output size. A simple portrait against a plain wall compresses much more efficiently than detailed foliage or noisy low-light photography. If a form requires 20–50 KB, adjust dimensions and quality while checking the actual output size after each attempt.
Keep the original
Never overwrite the only high-quality copy while testing. Lossy compression discards information. Recompressing an already compressed output compounds the damage, so each new attempt should start from the original whenever possible.
Verify the destination requirement
Government portals and recruitment notices can specify width, height, background, file format and KB range together. Meeting only the KB limit is not enough if the dimensions or format are wrong.

Why this guide exists
Divya Tools publishes utilities for quick practical work. The purpose of this guide is to expose the assumptions and common failure points that a calculator or converter cannot communicate through input fields alone. If you spot a factual or functional error, use the contact page so the page can be reviewed and corrected.
